When welabs was founded in 2015 by Jens and Mio, the distance between those two was still small, between Darmstadt and Mainz. A bit later Mainz turned to Braunschweig and when one of them started their life as a digital nomad, Braunschweig turned to Vietnam, Thailand, Portugal or Indonesia.
The team grew and also the distances we had to face. Since the founding and until today we have been working together in over ten countries, three continents and counting.
In meetings we usually have one person at their desk with the casual morning coffee while another one is having a dinner smoothie at sunset under palm trees. The first fifteen minutes we usually spend giving a quick update on where we are and what we are up to. And we couldn't imagine it any other way. Remote work became our way within just a few years and we are proud to say that we never had an office. Ever.
But working remotely does not look like sitting with your laptop in a hanging chair all day – to be able to work from home or from somewhere else it takes discipline, autonomy and a high level of communication within your team. Because working remotely does not come without flexible working hours, regular updates on travel plans or individual availabilities. Otherwise this will never work.
We are very aware that only a few companies have the privilege to include remote work into their daily work life. We are convinced that it is a challenge that as many as possible should face if they are able to. Past events like the Covid pandemic have proven that extreme situations require extreme measures which we were not prepared for and our work place is definitely one of them. So we would like to encourage everyone who is able to give it a try!
